San Diego, Calif. - The UNLV men's soccer team put up a valiant effort in their match against the Toreros of San Diego on Sunday before an overtime loss ended play at 3-2.
The Rebels scored the first goal of the match at the 26:06 mark off a breakaway by sophomore Tuomas Talvio with the assist going to junior Jason Melendez. The Toreros answered back at the 33rd minute with the first of three goals by Ryan Coiner.
The game remained 1-1 through the rest of the first half and into the second. Sophomore Reggie Bolden tallied his first goal of the season with a remarkable bicycle kick at the 74:49 mark to give the Rebels the lead once again. With less than four minutes to play in regulation, Coiner knotted the match at two, dribbling past Rebel goalie Robert Ackah who was bidding for his forth victory in as many starts.
San Diego (7-1) scored the "golden goal" at the 100:16 mark off a header by Coiner for his third goal of the match. With this loss, the Rebels drop their third overtime match of the season and fall to 3-4-1 on the year.
UNLV returns home on Friday, Sept. 29 against Drury University in the UNLV Coors Light Invitational. Kick-off is at 7:00 p.m. followed by San Diego State vs. Louisville. Sunday's action pits UNLV against Louisville at noon. The second match of the day will feature San Diego State vs. Drury with a 2:00 start.
