Volleyball Falls To No. 14 BYU

PROVO, Utah - UNLV dropped a three-game match (30-21, 33-31, 30-19) to No. 14 BYU on Saturday night at Smith Fieldhouse.

It is the sixth straight loss for the Rebels, who opened the season with a 5-3 record. The loss drops the Rebels to 5-9 on the season, 2-5 in the Mountain West Conference. The Cougars improve to 12-2 overall, 6-1 in league play.

Sheila Ocasio-Clemente led the team with ten kills and a .400 (10-2-20) attack percentage. She also added five blocks in the match.

Blair Wilkes followed with nine kills and a .389 (9-2-18) attack percentage. Wilkes also dropped five blocks on the Cougars in the match.

Patricia Assuncao and Leiana Oswald each finished with double-figure digs in the match with 11 and 10 respectively. Assuncao also added eight kills, while Oswald added six.

Nicki King and Amy Lewis shared setter duties on the night. King led the team with 16 assists, while Lewis finished with 15.

Michelle Johnson finished with four kills and three blocks.

BYU was led by Nina Puikkonen's 15 kills and nine digs.

UNLV returns home to the Cox Pavilion on Thursday, October 18 for a 7 p.m. match against Air Force. The Rebels defeated the Falcons 3-1 at Colorado Springs earlier this season.

UNLV also hosts New Mexico on Friday at 5 p.m. in the Cox Pavilion. The match was originally scheduled for 7 p.m., but was moved to accommodate the 7:30 NBA game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings in the Thomas & Mack that night.
