Swimmers Strengthen Lead At Mountain West Invite

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV men's and women's teams strengthened their leads on the second day of the UNLV Mountain West Invitational Friday.

Through 24 events, the UNLV women now hold a 124.5 point advantage over second-place San Diego State (596.5-472). Fresno State is currently third with 393 points, Wyoming fourth at 358.5, New Mexico fifth at 304, Cal State Northridge sixth at 276, and the University of LaVerne in seventh with 14 points. LaVerne did not compete in the first ten events on Thursday.

The UNLV men are currently in first place with 801 points, while Wyoming holds second place with 604 points, Cal State Northridge sits in third with 466 points and the University of LaVerne holds fourth with 89 points.

Both the men's and women's teams opened Friday's meet with wins in the 200 medley relay. The women's team of Lindsey Whipple, Madalina Tin, Julie Unrau and Lorena Diaconescu won in 1:46.43, while the men's team of David Schick, Ramzy Ladah, Andrew Livingston and Michael Short won in 1:33.10.

Andrew Livingston followed up his medley relay win with a first-place finish in the 400 IM. He finished in 4:00.76, currently the fastest time in the Mountain West Conference this season.

David Schick won the 100 fly in 49.12, placing him among the nation's top 10 fastest times this season. Michael Day (51.07) and Michael Short (52.22) finished second and third respectively.

The Rebel women finished 1-2-3 in the 200 free, with Lorena Diaconescu taking first place in an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:46.88. Tamee Ebert (1:51.79) and Alyson Noble (1:54.19) finished second and third respectively.

Jacint Simon picked up a win in the 200 free on the men's side. He finished in 1:38.82, topping his own conference-leading best time by two seconds.

Madalina Tin topped her conference-leading best time in the 100 breast with a winning time of 1:04.86.

The Rebel men took the top four spots in the 100 breast, with Ramzy Ladah winning the event in 57.87. Bjorn Eriksson took second in 58.52, Quincy Schmidt finished third in 58.63 and Ari Berlin captured fourth in 59.89.

Both the men's and women's teams finished the day with wins in the 800 free relay. The men's team of Jacint Simon, Andrew Livingston, Tommy Zauder and Quinten Allen won in 6:52.61, while the women's team of Madalina Tin, Alyson Noble, Tamee Ebert and Lorena Diaconescu won in 7:31.25.

The invite concludes Saturday with prelims scheduled for 11 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
