Swimming Wins Home Invitational

LAS VEGAS - Both the UNLV men's and women's swim teams earned victories at the UNLV Mountain West Invitational on Saturday night.

The Rebel women posted a 168.5 point advantage over second-place San Diego State (850.5-682). Fresno State placed third with 588 points, Wyoming fourth at 515.5, New Mexico fifth at 445, Cal State Northridge sixth at 380, and the University of La Verne in seventh with 32 points. La Verne did not compete in the first ten events on Thursday.

The UNLV men took first place with 1161 points, while Wyoming placed second place with 845 points, Cal State Northridge finished third with 639 points and the University of La Verne followed in fourth with 166 points.

The Rebel women opened Saturday's meet with a 1-2 finish in the 1650 free. Tamee Ebert took first with a provisional NCAA "B" time of 16:46.34. Alyson Noble finished second in 16:58.43. Andy Kapchinske took first place in the 200 back, topping his closest competitor by nearly a full second (1:54.79-1:55.75).

Lorena Diaconescu's won the 100 free in 50.01, the fastest in the Mountain West Conference this season. Tamee Ebert followed with a third-place finish in 52.95.

The Rebel men took eight of the top ten spots in the 100 free, conceding third and fourth place to Wyoming. Michael Short took first in 46.12, followed by Jacint Simon's time of 46.16. Fifth through tenth places were taken by Bjorn Eriksson, Quinten Allen, David Schick, Andy Kapchinske, Tommy Zauder and Michael Schmidt respectively.

Madalina Tin took first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:20.72.

UNLV went 1-2-3 in the 200 breast on the men's side. Ramzy Ladah finished first (2:07.62), followed by Ari Berlin (2:09.43) and Quincy Schmidt (2:09.60).

Andrew Livingston set a MWC season-best time in the 200 fly at 1:47.03. Michael Day finished second in 1:50.69.

The Rebels added exclamation points to their team victories with wins in the 400 free relay to finish the meet. The men's team of Michael Short, Jacint Simon, Tommy Zauder and Bjorn Eriksson won in 3:05.45, while the women's team of Dana Penn, Tamee Ebert, Alyson Noble and Madalina Tin finished first in 3:31.93.

UNLV hosts the inaugural Rebel Relays on Saturday at 9 a.m. The meet will feature eight different relay events not normally held during the competitive season.
