ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The UNLV baseball team lost 14-0 to No. 10 Nebraska at the 2001 Applebee's Baseball Fiesta on Sunday morning. Jake Gann (0-1), who started on the mound for the Hustlin' Rebels, picked up the loss. He pitched 3.0 innings and gave up 12 runs, six earned.
The Rebels committed two costly errors in the second inning that led to six unearned runs for the Cornhuskers, including a three-run home run by Nebraska's Matt Hopper.
UNLV gave up another six runs in the fourth. The Huskers hit four straight singles to load the bases and bring in the first run. Gann brought the second run home with a hit-by-pitch, then allowed another single RBI before the Rebels brought in freshman Robbie Van for relief.
With the bases loaded, Van allowed his first run to cross the plate on a wild pitch. A ground out to the shortstop scored another and a wild pitch put another runner in scoring position. Van gave up a single to Tito Rivera, scoring Will Bolt. A 6-4-3 double play ended the inning.
Van gave up a pair of runs in the sixth, beginning with a John Cole solo home run to right center. Jeff Blevins, who singled to center field, later scored on a bases loaded wild pitch.
Jared Bonnell finished the final two innings of the game, giving up only one hit and no runs.
One bright spot defensively for the Rebels was the execution of three double plays for the game.
Garett Shitanishi led the Rebels with two hits. He finished the day 2-for-4. Brad Beasley, David Trujillo, Brent Johnson and Zach Strong all managed a single hit.
UNLV returns home for the Coors Desert Classic beginning Thursday, February 22. The Rebels begin play at 3:05 p.m. against Clemson. Oregon State will also participate in the weekend contests.
