Baseball Falls To Nevada, Reno

March 12, 2001

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV baseball team snapped a five-game winning streak with a 6-5 loss to Nevada, Reno on Monday. The loss drops the Rebels to 11-12 on the season. The Wolfpack improves to 10-12.

UNLV nearly repeated the stunning ninth-inning comeback of Sunday's game against Air Force, but today's rally fell just short.

Down three in the bottom of the ninth, David Trujillo singled to left field scoring freshman pinch-hitter George Fletcher and Garett Shitanishi, who both reached on singles. Trujillo's two RBI single also advanced Brent Johnson, who reached on a walk, to second.

Trent Kitsch's fly out to right field missed carrying the wall by ten feet for what would have been a game-winning homerun. John Cruz struck out to end the game, stranding runners at first and third.

Reno's Mateo Miramontes (4-1) earned the win, pitching 7.1 innings and giving up three runs on three hits with seven strikeouts. George Moran pitched the final two outs and earned his second save.

Jared Bonnell (2-2) started on the mound for the Rebels and picked up the loss. He pitched 3.2 innings, giving up six runs on eleven hits with four strikeouts. Robbie Van pitched the middle innings, giving up only four hits in 3.1 innings. Chad Harris and Joe Maruffi combined to finish the game. Neither gave up a hit.

Garett Shitanishi led the Rebels offensively, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Brent Johnson, David Trujillo, Brad Hertel and George Fletcher each added a single hit.

UNLV hosts Hosei University of Tokyo, Japan for an exhibition game on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. before returning to conference play this weekend. The Rebels host San Diego State for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
