SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The UNLV baseball team dropped a 12-11 decision to Utah on Sunday at Franklin Covey Field, despite out-hitting the Utes 17 to 10. The loss drops the Rebels to 12-17 overall, 4-5 in league play. The Utes improve to 16-12, 6-3 in league play.
UNLV's Robbie Van (1-5), who started the fifth inning in relief for Giovanni Pupo, earned the loss. He gave up five runs on two hits with two walks and failed to record an out. Pupo gave up four runs on five hits in his four innings of work.
Brad Maloff, Ben Scheinbaum and Doug Thornton combined to finish the game. Maloff threw two-thirds of an inning with two runs on one hit. Scheinbaum went 1.2 innings with one run on two hits and two strikeouts. Thornton finished the game, pitching a hitless 1.2 innings with one strikeout.
Utah's Brett Lindsey, who pitched the fourth inning, earned the win.
Brad Beasley led the Rebels offensively, finishing the game 4-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Garett Shitanishi went 4-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored. Trent Kitsch finished 4-for-5 with two RBIs.
David Trujillo extended his team-leading hitting streak to five games with a 3-for-5 effort.
Utah was led by Sam Swenson, who finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
UNLV returns home to Earl E. Wilson Stadium on Wednesday to host UC-Riverside at 5:00 p.m.
