Baseball Defeats UC-Riverside Wednesday Night

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV baseball team used seven pitchers en route to a 9-6 victory over UC-Riverside at Earl E. Wilson Stadium on Wednesday night. With the win, the Rebels improve to 13-17 on the season, while the Highlanders fall to 12-15.

Ben Scheinbaum (1-0), who pitched the fifth inning, earned the win. He struck out one in one inning of work. Joe Maruffi pitched the ninth inning to earn his second save of the season, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

Donnie Watts, C.J. Martin, Brad Maloff, Chad Harris and Doug Thornton also saw action on the mound.

UC-Riverside's Matt Thiessen picked up the loss, pitching 1.1 innings and giving up six runs on four hits.

David Trujillo extended his hitting streak to six games with a 1-for-3 effort. Garett Shitanishi went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Ryan Ruiz finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Joe Jacobitz, John Cruz, Brent Johnson and Ryan Hanson all managed a single hit each. Jacobitz drove in a game-high three RBIs.

The Highlanders were led by Brian Wahlbrink, who went 3-for-3 with three runs scored.

UNLV returns to conference play, hosting BYU for a three-game series. The first game will begin at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday.
