Baseball Struggles Against BYU

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV baseball team fell to BYU 8-3 on Thursday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. With the loss, the Rebels fall to 12-18, 4-6 in Mountain West Conference play. BYU improves to 15-13 overall, 6-4 in league play.

The Rebels took a 2-0 advantage into the fifth inning before the Cougar bats awoke for a four-run inning. UNLV could only muster a single run in retaliation for the eventual 8-3 loss.

UNLV starter Jared Bonnell (2-3) picked up the loss. He pitched 4.1 innings, giving up four runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Robbie Van pitched 3.2 innings, giving up four runs on six hits with eight strikeouts. Brad Maloff pitched the final inning with one strikeout and no hits.

BYU's Nate Fernley pitched a complete game for the win, his ninth of the season (9-1). Fernley gave up three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.

David Trujillo extended his hitting streak to seven games with a 1-for-3 effort. He drove in two runs and scored once.

Garett Shitanishi and Joe Jacobitz each finished with two hits, while Brent Johnson finished 1-for-3 with one RBI.

UNLV and BYU play game two of the three-game set on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
