SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The UNLV baseball team dropped an 11-1 decision to San Diego State on Saturday night. The loss drops the Rebels to 15-23 overall, 6-11 in the Mountain West Conference. The Aztecs improve to 23-15, 12-5 in league play.
The Rebels struggled offensively, managing only three hits in the ballgame. UNLV's only run came in the seventh inning off a Ryan Ruiz home run, his second of the season.
Jared Bonnell (2-4) picked up the loss for the Rebels. He pitched five innings, giving up eight runs on eleven hits with four strikeouts. Ben Scheinbaum pitched the sixth, giving up only one hit and no runs. C.J. Martin pitched the seventh, giving up three runs on four hits. Chad Harris pitched the final inning with one hit, one walk and one strikeout.
Garett Shitanishi extended his hitting streak to five games with a 1-for-4 effort.
David Trujillo, currently riding a 13-game hitting streak, did not play. George Fletcher, playing first base for Trujillo, finished the game 1-for-3.
SDSU's Rory Shortell (6-1) earned the win, pitching eight innings with nine strikeouts.
UNLV looks to avoid the season sweep when it wraps up the three-game series at San Diego State on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. PST. Sunday's game will be broadcast on KSHP 1400 AM and will be available online at www.unlvrebels.com.
