SAN DIEGO - UNLV's Tiffany Smith won the triple jump and freshman Christine Spence captured the high jump to lead the Rebels to a fifth-place finish at the San Diego All-Women's Invitational on Saturday.

Smith won in the triple jump for the second time this season, leaping 39-06.00. Spence's win was the first in her career in the high jump. She cleared a career-best 5-08.50 to win the event by a full two inches, and finished second in the 400 hurdles with a season-best mark of 1:01.20.

Missing three of its top runners, the Rebels were still able to rack up 83 points and finish in fifth place. Host San Diego State won the meet, scoring 168. The jumping crew produced 31 of those points as Tianika Sharrieff added a third-place score in the high jump, and Belisa Suarez and Patrice Harvey finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the long jump.

Also turning in good marks for UNLV were Nickeisha Charles, who clocked a career-best 55.33 to finish second in the 400 meters, and Jennifer Gardner, who tossed the javelin a career-best 132-02.00 to finish third.

The Rebels gear up for the one of the largest track meets in the West next weekend at Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. The three-day affair kicks off on Friday, April 20.
