Baseball Struggles At New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The UNLV baseball team dropped the first game of a three-game series at New Mexico, 7-1. The loss drops the Rebels to 14-20 overall, 5-8 in the Mountain West Conference. The Lobos improve to 17-22 overall, 7-6 in league play.

Ryan Olson (2-2) picked up the loss for the Rebels, despite a good showing. Olson pitched seven innings, giving up four runs on four hits with six strikeouts. Only two of the four runs were earned. Brad Maloff finished the final inning, giving up three runs on three hits with one strikeout.

Garett Shitanishi led the Rebels offensively, finishing the game 3-for-4. David Trujillo went 1-for-4 and extended his team-leading hitting streak to ten games.

Brent Johnson, Jason Reuss and Brad Beasley all finished 1-for-3 in the game. Beasley's single scored Johnson in the seventh inning for the team's only run.

New Mexico's Chris Cooper (4-4) pitched a seven-hit complete game. He finished the game with a season-high 13 strikeouts.

UNLV and New Mexico continue the three-game series on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. PST.
