LAS VEGAS - Southern Utah University and the University of Utah lead the men's and women's competitions, respectively, after the first day of the UNLV Track and Field Invitational Friday at Myron Partridge Track and Sheila Tarr Smith Field.
The Thunderbirds hold a 38-34 edge over Northern Arizona in the two-team men's contest based upon their depth. NAU picked up wins in the hammer and the shot while SUU's Auston Beardall was a default winner as the only athlete entered in the long jump.
On the women's side, Utah's Chantel Goldsberry led a 1-3-5-6 Ute finish in the hammer throw. Utah collected 23 points in the hammer, six in the shot put and another in the long jump to post its leading score of 30.
NAU sits second in the women's race as well, with 26 points, followed by UNLV.
The Rebels racked up 15 of their 20 points in the long jump. Sophomore Patrice Harvey leapt a career-best 18-09.25 to finish third in the event. Tiffany Smith followed in fourth, clearing 18-06.50 and Belisa Suarez jumped 18-05.00 to place fifth. All three athletes notched season bests.
Leah Johnson and Nicole Martinez rounded out UNLV's first-day scoring with respective sixth- and seventh-place finishes in the shot put. Johnson threw 40-05.00 to edge Martinez, whose 40-04.25 was a season best.
Competition will resume on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
