ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The UNLV baseball team avoided a three-game sweep at New Mexico with a 15-8 victory on Sunday in Albuquerque. With the win, the Rebels improve to 15-21 overall and 6-9 in the Mountain West Conference. The Lobos fall to 18-23, 8-7 in league play.
The Rebels put up six runs in the second inning and never looked back, parlaying 21 hits into 15 runs for the game.
Courtney Hall (5-5) started on the mound for Rebels and picked up his fifth win of the season. He pitched 6.2 innings, giving up eight runs on 14 hits with one strikeout. Ben Scheinbaum and Joe Maruffi combined to finish the game without giving up a hit and striking out one apiece.
UNM's Greg Atencio drops to 0-5 on the season after a two-inning start in which he gave up six runs on eight hits.
Zach Strong led the Rebels offensively, going 4-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored. Brent Johnson went 3-for-4 with one RBI and three runs scored. Garett Shitanishi also finished with three hits, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and one run scored.
David Trujillo finished 2-for-6 and extended his team-leading hitting streak to twelve games.
Trent Kitsch homered twice, going 2-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored. It was Kitsch's twelfth multiple RBI game of the season.
John Cruz, Joe Jacobitz, Ryan Ruiz and Brad Beasley each added two hits in the win.
UNLV continues its ten-game road trip next weekend with a three-game series at San Diego State. Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. PST. Saturday's and Sunday's games will be broadcast on KSHP 1400 AM and will be available online at www.unlvrebels.com.
