Baseball Defeats BYU In Extra Inning

PROVO, Utah - The UNLV baseball team scored four runs in the tenth inning to defeat BYU 8-5 on Thursday night. With the win, the Rebels improve to 22-29, 13-15 in the Mountain West Conference. The Cougars fall to 32-19, 19-8 in league play.

UNLV starter Ryan Olson took a 4-4 tie into the ninth inning before being relieved by Joe Maruffi. Olson gave up four runs on ten hits with five strikeouts. Maruffi (1-1) picked up his first win of the season, pitching 1.2 innings and giving up one run on one hit with two strikeouts.

BYU's Scott Koffman (1-1) picked up the loss. He pitched 5.0 innings, giving up three runs on two hits with five strikeouts.

First baseman David Trujillo went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, extending his hitting streak to a Mountain West Conference record 26 games.

Joe Jacobitz drove in a pair of runs, finishing 2-for-5 in the game. John Cruz went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Jacobitz and Cruz each homered in the game.

Trent Kitsch, George Fletcher and Brad Hertel each added a single hit in the game.

BYU was led by Kianoa Obrey who finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

UNLV and BYU play the second game of the three-game series on Friday at 6:00 p.m. PST.
