PROVO, Utah - The UNLV baseball team dropped an 11-1 decision to BYU on Friday night before a record crowd of 3,120 at Larry H. Miller Field. With the loss, the Rebels fall to 22-30 overall, 13-16 in the Mountain West Conference. The Cougars improve to 33-19, 20-8 in league play.
Starter Jared Bonnell (4-6) picked up the loss. He pitched 4.2 innings, giving up seven runs on eleven hits. C.J. Martin pitched 1.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits, and Giovanni Pupo finished the final two innings, giving up two runs on two hits.
BYU's Nate Fernley (14-2) earned the win, giving up only one run on eight hits with five strikeouts. He threw 116 pitches to remain the winningest NCAA pitcher this season with 14 victories.
UNLV's only run came in the sixth inning on a Brad Beasley double down the left field line, scoring Ryan Ruiz. Ruiz reached on double. Beasley finished the game 2-for-3 with one RBI.
David Trujillo finished the game 2-for-3, extending his conference-leading hitting streak to 27 games.
Garett Shitanishi, Joe Jacobitz, Brad Hertel and Ryan Ruiz all added a single hit each.
BYU was led by designated hitter Jeff Hiestand who finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs scored.
UNLV and BYU wrap up the three-game series as well as regular season play on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. PST.
