LAS VEGAS - The UNLV baseball team picked up a 7-5 victory over New Mexico to move into third place in the Mountain West Conference. With the win, the Rebels improve to 21-27 overall, 12-13 in the MWC. The Lobos fall to 21-30, 11-14 in league play.
UNLV starter Ryan Olson (3-4) earned the win, pitching seven innings and giving up four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Joe Maruffi earned his fifth save of the season with a one-inning, one-hit performance.
UNM's Chris Cooper (5-6) picked up the loss. He pitched 6.2 innings and gave up seven runs on 12 hits with six strikeouts.
Rebel David Trujillo went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, extending his conference-leading hitting streak to 23 games. The league record for a consecutive game hitting streak is 25, set by New Mexico's Scott Candelaria last season.
Joe Jacobitz and George Fletcher each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Garett Shitanishi went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.
Four Lobos finished the game with a pair of hits each, led by Anthony Lovato's 2-for-4, two-RBI performance. Troy Cairns finished 2-for-3, while Mark Okano and Donny Sevieri each went 2-for-4.
UNLV and New Mexico play game two of the three-game series on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. PST.
