LAS VEGAS - The New Mexico Lobos used a four-run ninth inning to defeat the Rebels 9-5 on Sunday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. With the loss, the Rebels fall to 21-29 overall and are tied for fourth place in the Mountain West Conference with Utah at 12-15. The Lobos improve to 23-30, 13-14 in league play.
The Rebels took a 5-5 tie into the ninth inning before Doug Thornton (1-2) gave up the first of four runs in the inning. Thornton pitched 1.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits with one strikeout. Robbie Van recorded one out in the ninth, but gave up two runs on two walks. Joe Maruffi finished the game, but gave up one run on two hits.
UNLV starter Courtney Hall pitched 6.2 innings and gave up only two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
New Mexico's Kris Gross (2-4) earned the win in relief. He pitched only one inning with one strikeout.
David Trujillo extended his conference-leading hitting streak to 25 games with a 2-for-5 outing. He also drove in two runs and scored twice. His 25-game hitting streak ties the Mountain West Conference record set by New Mexico's Scott Candelaria last season.
Garett Shitanishi (2-for-5) and Trent Kitsch (2-for-4) each added a pair of hits. Joe Jacobitz, Brent Johnson, Jason Reuss, Ryan Ruiz, Brad Beasley and John Cruz managed a single hit each.
UNLV wraps up the regular season with a three-game series at BYU beginning on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. PST.
