LAS VEGAS - The UNLV women's basketball team will begin a five-game tour of Europe on Saturday that will span 12 days and three countries, the school announced Tuesday.
Thanks to donations from several prominent local boosters, the Lady Rebels were able to raise more than $75,000 necessary to make the tour possible.
"This not only gives the team an opportunity to practice for 10 days and get to play five extra games this year, it's an extremely good educational experience for them to appreciate and understand the diversity of the world," UNLV head coach Regina Miller said. "It's really a tremendous opportunity for the team to bond as a unit."
Aside from promoting an educational experience for the team and allowing seniors to showcase their abilities to professional scouts in Europe, the idea for the trip is especially meaningful for the two German players on the UNLV roster, Linda Fr?hlich and Petra Gl?ser, who will get a chance to play with their teammates in front of their friends and family for the first time.
The roster for the tour will include 13 players from last season's squad that advanced to the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament. The squad will play two games in Germany, three games in Belgium, and spend a day touring Amsterdam, Netherlands before returning to Las Vegas on Aug. 22.
