ST. GEORGE, Utah - UCLA's Scott McEwan threw two fourth-quarter scoring passes and USC's David Newbury kicked a 21-yard field goal in the second overtime Saturday as the West team beat Utah-Colorado (UTCO) in the inaugural Paradise Bowl.
The game matched standout players from schools around the West, drawing on the Pac-10, Western Athletic, Mountain West and Big Sky conferences. UNLV placed seven players on the UTCO squad: WR Bobby Nero, OL Greg Hulett, OL Pete Tramontanas, DE Adrian Watson, LB Scott Parkhurst, LB LaMar Owens and LB Shanga Wilson.
UTCO led 30-14 after Keith Boyea of Air Force threw an 8-yard scoring pass to Utah's Dennis Smith with 4:52 remaining.
McEwan directed a comeback, throwing to Derrick Lewis of San Diego State for a 20-yard TD and then connecting with Ryan Dennard of Arizona State on the 2-point conversion to make it 30-22 with 2:29 to play.
After the West recovered the ensuing onside kick, McEwan and Lewis hooked up again on a 6-yard TD pass with 1:28 left. McEwan threw to Lewis on the PAT, tying the score at 30-30.
Offensively, Nero caught one pass in the game for 26 yards. Hulett and Tramontanas both anchored UTCO's most productive offensive line unit. Wilson tallied five tackles for the defense.
