LAS VEGAS (AP)- Jason Straight, a freshman guard, scored 16 points Saturday night as the Wyoming Cowboys opened Mountain West Conference play with a 69-59 win over UNLV, their first victory over the Rebels in Las Vegas since 1981.
Josh Davis had 14 points and nine rebounds for Wyoming (10-4). Marcus Bailey added 13 points.
Dalron Johnson scored 19 points for UNLV (7-5, 0-1). Chris Richardson added 11 points and Marcus Banks and Lou Kelly each scored 10.
The Cowboys outrebounded UNLV 45-31, and the Rebels shot only 27 percent (16 of 59) from the field while Wyoming made 51 percent (28 of 55).
The Cowboys committed 23 turnovers, allowing the Rebels, who had 15, to keep the game relatively close.
The Cowboys, who had lost the last four games in the series, led 34-32 early in the second half and scored six consecutive points to build the lead to 40-32 with 15:40 left.
They went on to pad the lead to 64-52 with 3:10 remaining.
Bailey scored 11 points in the second half, mostly on layups, before fouling out late in the game.
The Cowboys led 32-29 at the end of a first half in which the biggest lead was Wyoming's 23-18 advantage with 5:35 remaining. UNLV's last lead in the game was 16-14 with 7:43 left in the first half.
