GAME PREVIEW
UNLV (2-4) looks for its first road victory of the season when it travels to Brigham Young (3-3) Saturday in a battle of two teams seeking their first Mountain West Conference victory of 2002 ... Last week, the Rebels lost their seventh straight conference opener and had their two-game home winning streak snapped as New Mexico won in Las Vegas for the first time ever, 25-16 ... The Cougars (3-3) played their fourth consecutive road game and suffered their worst league loss ever, 52-9 at Air Force ... UNLV has not won in Provo since 1981 ... UNLV is 4-6 on the road vs. MWC opponents all-time ... BYU and Colorado State are the only two MWC teams that John Robinson has not defeated in his career ... After two straight games without being televised, UNLV will make its first appearance on SportsWest this season ... The Rebels are 0-3 on TV in 2002 but 6-4 on SportsWest during the Robinson Era ... The teams share one common opponent this fall: BYU lost to UNR 31-28 on September 14 while UNLV downed the Wolf Pack 21-17 on October 5.
COUGARS vs. REBELS NOTES
BYU leads the series 8-1, including six straight wins ... This will mark the first time UNLV faces BYU in Provo without LaVell Edwards leading the Cougars ... After being outscored 130-42 in the first three games since they became conference foes, UNLV has lost the last two games to BYU by a total of seven points ... Two former UNLV assistants are currently on the Cougar staff: TE coach Mike Empey (1997-98) and safeties coach Barry Lamb (1981-86) ... The schools first met in the Nikkan Yokohama Bowl on Dec. 2, 1978. BYU prevailed 28-24 in Japan in what was billed as the "Unofficial WAC Championship" ... The Rebels' only win in the series was also their only win over a ranked opponent as they stunned then-No. 8 BYU in Provo 21 years ago ... UNLV does not have a player from the state of Utah while BYU lists one Las Vegan on its roster -- junior LB Brent Carlson from Durango HS -- whose younger brother, Mitch Carlson, is a key member of UNLV's second-ranked golf team.
