LAS VEGAS - UNLV senior cornerback Chameion Sutton is one of 23 players that have been named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District VIII Football Team, which was announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday.
Sutton, a native of Seattle, Washington, and graduate of Franklin High School, boasts a career grade point average of 3.55 while majoring in social science. A former transfer from Butte College, Sutton earned academic All-America honors from J.C. Gridwire while a sophomore in junior college and was tabbed Academic All-Mountain West Conference in 2001.
A two-year starter for the Rebels, Sutton has 29 total tackles this fall despite missing the last two games because of injury. He also has totaled two pass breakups and a fumble recovery and returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown in UNLV's 24-3 victory at BYU.
The team was voted on by CoSIDA members from the district VIII states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington. The 23 first-team members advance to the national ballot, with the academic All-American teams set to be announced December 2.
Sutton is the first Rebel football player to be named academic first team all-district since offensive lineman John Greer did it in both 1999 and 2000.
