LAS VEGAS - The UNLV baseball team defeated Creighton 12-6 on Saturday afternoon, day two of the UNLV Tournament. The Rebels improve to 6-5 on the season.
Creighton falls to 0-3. The Jays lost 23-10 to UC-Santa Barbara in the morning game.
UNLV's David Seccombe (1-0) picked up the win over Creighton, pitching 6.0 innings with 7 strikeouts. He gave up four earned runs off nine hits.
The teams traded runs early in the game, but UNLV pulled ahead with a five-run sixth inning that was capped with a solo home run by left fielder Eric Nielsen.
Nielsen and Ryan Ruiz each finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Ruiz had a pair of doubles and a stolen base.
David Trujillo led the Rebel attack, finishing 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. He hit a two-run homer in the second inning to put UNLV on the scoreboard.
Catcher Robert VanKirk went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while teammate Steve Goldberg was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Garett Shitanishi also added two RBIs and a run scored in the win on 2-for-5 hitting.
Creighton was led by second baseman Chris Hinrichs who went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and 2 runs scored. He finished a double short of hitting for the cycle.
The Jays' Prentice Lofstedt (0-1) took the loss, giving up nine runs (six earned) on 10 hits in 5.0 innings of work
