LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Hustlin' Rebels couldn't overcome a decisive seventh-inning surge Tuesday night, falling 5-2 to the BYU Cougars at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
HOW IT WENT DOWN: UNLV (26-22) appeared poised to control the game early after Nin Burns II launched a solo home run to deep left in the second inning, tying the contest at 1-1. The Scarlet & Gray threatened again in the third, loading the bases with two outs following a Drew Barragan double and a hit-by-pitch, but BYU escaped the jam with a strikeout to keep the game even.
Both teams traded scoreless frames through the middle innings, with UNLV's pitching staff working out of trouble multiple times. The Rebels cycled through several arms, including Gavyn Bowen, Tate Foxson, Cody Albright and Jacob Gomberg, who combined to hold BYU (24-23) in check through six innings. After a leadoff walk in the seventh inning, the Cougars strung together timely hits, highlighted by Bryker Hurdsman's two-run single to left that broke the tie and gave the Cougars a 3-1 advantage. Crew McChesney followed with an RBI single, and a passed ball later in the inning allowed another run to score, capping a four-run outburst that put UNLV in a 5-1 hole.
The Rebels attempted to rally in the eighth. Jayden Hertel singled and advanced to third, setting the stage for Jack Salmon's RBI single to shallow center to cut the deficit to 5-2. UNLV pushed another runner into scoring position, but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat. UNLV managed a baserunner in the ninth when Burns II singled, but a lineout and a game-ending double play sealed the outcome.
