Swimming Wins Match-Up With Air Force

LAS VEGAS - Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams emerged victorious over Air Force in the final dual meet of the year. The women won 139-103. The men beat the Falcons 140-99.

The Rebels won every relay and 20 of 26 events for the meet.

On the women's side, UNLV's Lorena Diaconescu won the 100 freestyle in 51.42.

Newcomer Raluca Udroui won the 200 IM in 2:06.61 and 200 backstroke in 2:01.32. Teammate Lindsey Whipple took second in 200 back (2:05.96).

Julie Unrau won the 200 butterfly in 2:05.24 and finished second behind Udroui in the 200 IM (2:09.10).

Alyson Noble won the 500 free (4:58.91) and 1000 free (10:14.00), followed by Tera Sherard who took second in the 1000 freestyle in 10:28.89.

Other Rebel winners were Tamee Ebert in the 200 freestyle (1:53.18) and Khawinda Kuhn in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.54). Teammate Megan Rohner finished third in the 200 breast (2:31.39).

Dana Penn took second in both the 200 freestyle (1:55.72) and 200 butterfly (2:06.53)

The relay team of Udroui, Diaconescu, Unrau and Whipple defeated the Falcons by nearly six seconds in the 200-yard medley with a time of 1:47.02.

Diaconescu also teamed with Noble, Ebert and Penn to win the 200 free relay in 1:37.99.

Winners on the Falcons' women's team were Andrea Hyma in the 50 free (25.12), Cuffy Hulse in 1-meter diving and Jessica Williams in 3-meter diving.

On the men's side, the Rebels swept first through third in two freestyle events.

Jacint Simon (1:40.89), David Schick (1:41.95) and Quinten Allen (1:42.92) went 1-2-3 in the 200 free, while Michael Short (45.32), Tommy Zauder (46.62) and Allen (46.70) repeated the feat in the 100 free.

Simon also won the 500 free in 4:37.44.

Schick, Bjorn Eriksson, Patrick Adams and Short won the 200 medley relay in 1:31.23. Short turned in a 50-yard free time of 19.95 in final leg of the relay, the fastest time in the Mountain West Conference this year.

The team of Short, Eriksson, Simon and Michael Schmidt also won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:22.29.

Paul Valen won the 1000 free (9:27.85), followed by teammate Kevin Williams in second (9:46.74).

Other Rebel winners were Michael Day in the 200 IM (1:54.71), Andrew Livingston in the 200 butterfly (1:48.34), and Lucas Richmond, who won 1-meter diving with a score of 237.37.

Jon Hugo came in second in the 50 free (21.24) followed by teammates Schmidt (21.38) and Eriksson (21.49). Hugo also took second in the 200 back (1:53.48).

Winners on the Falcons' men's team were John Dayton in the 50 free (25.12), Paul Brehm in the 200 back (1:50.38) and Brady Lindberg in 3-meter diving.

The Rebels return to action at the end of the month when they travel to the Mountain West Conference Championships in Oklahoma City Feb. 27 through Mar. 2.
