LAS VEGAS - The UNLV baseball team used an eight-run fourth inning to power its way to a 15-6 victory over New Mexico on Easter Sunday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The win capped a three-game sweep of the Lobos.
With the win, the Rebels improve to 14-16 overall and 4-5 in the Mountain West Conference. The Lobos fall to 15-17, 5-4 in league play.
Rebel starter Robbie Van (2-5) earned the win, pitching 6.1 innings and giving up three runs on six hits with a season-high nine strikeouts.
James Wickman finished the inning for Van, giving up a single hit in two-thirds of an inning. Jeremy Weinberg pitched the eighth inning, also giving up just one hit, and Joe Maruffi came in to close, allowing three runs on two hits.
Lobo Jeremy DeYapp (3-2) picked up the loss, his second of the season. DeYapp gave up eight runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings of work.
David Trujillo led the Rebels offensively, hitting 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Joe Wickman was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored. Garett Shitanishi and Robert VanKirk both added a pair of hits and an RBI in the win.
Brent Johnson finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Jason Reuss had just one hit, a two-RBI home run in the fourth.
The Lobos were led by shortstop Dusty Young, who went 2-for-5 with a two-RBI homer in the ninth.
UNLV completes its four-game home stand on Monday with rematch against No. 16 Arizona State. The Sun Devils won the first meeting 10-0. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
