TEMPE, Ariz. - The UNLV baseball team dropped a 10-0 decision to No. 15 Arizona State in the Bob Schaefer Memorial Classic in Tempe, Ariz. on Friday night. The game ended with a two-run home run in the seventh inning on a 10-run mercy rule.
The Rebels had no answer for the pitching of Arizona State's Robbie McClellan who gave up only four hits and struck out 10 in seven innings of work. It is the second consecutive compete game for McClellan.
UNLV's Giovanni Pupo picked up the loss despite giving up only one run in a single inning. Ben Scheinbaum pitched three innings in relief, giving up three runs on three hits. Donnie Watts gave up four runs in two innings of work, while Dean Berman pitched to the final two batters, giving up a walk and home run to end the game.
Sophomore Brent Johnson finished with two of the team's four hits, both doubles. Robert VanKirk went 1-for-3 and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Garett Shitanishi also went 1-for-3 in the game.
Three Sun Devils picked up a pair of hits in the game, led by Jeremy West who finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs and one run scored.
UNLV wraps up tournament play on Saturday with a 2 p.m. game against No. 21 Oklahoma State.
