LAS VEGAS - The UNLV baseball team dropped a 10-3 decision to San Diego State on Friday night in San Diego. With the loss, the Rebels fall to 16-19 overall, 5-8 in Mountain West Conference play. The Aztecs improve to 26-12 overall, 9-3 in league play.
UNLV starter Courtney Hall (2-5) picked up the loss. He struggled early, pitching only 1.2 innings and giving up seven runs on eight hits. Ben Scheinbaum pitched well in relief, going 4.1 innings with one unearned run on three hits.
Donnie Watts and Doug Thornton combined to finish the game. Watts pitched a full inning, giving up only one hit, while Thornton gave up two runs on one hit in the final inning.
SDSU's Chris Dunwell (5-3) pitched seven strong innings for the win. He gave up only two runs on four hits with eight strikeouts.
Eric Human closed the game for the Aztecs, going 2.0 innings with one run off two hits.
David Trujillo was the only Rebel with more than one hit in the contest. He finished the game 2-for-4 with one run scored. Garett Shitanishi, Eric Nielsen, Robert VanKirk and Derek Amundsen all added a single hit.
The Aztecs were led by Jake McLintock who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
UNLV and SDSU will continue the three-game series on Saturday at 6 p.m.
