GAME PREVIEW
UNLV will look for its first win of the season by hosting Big 12 Conference member Kansas Saturday night ... The Rebels, who opened at home last week with a 27-7 loss to Wisconsin, have not started a campaign with two consecutive home games since 1992 ... KU plays its second consecutive road game to open its season as the Jayhawks fell in new coach Mark Mangino's debut last weekend, 45-3, at Iowa State ... Saturday marks only the fourth time that a team from the Big 12 Conference will come to Las Vegas and the 10th time the Rebels will face a team from the league overall ... UNLV is 1-2 vs. Baylor, 0-1 vs. Nebraska, 0-2 vs. Kansas State and 0-3 vs. Iowa State ... Saturday will break UNLV's school-record 17-game streak of games being televised ... It will be the first Rebel home game not to make TV somewhere since North Texas on Sept. 16, 2000 -- a string of 10 Sam Boyd Stadium games hitting the air ... Last week UNLV set a school, stadium and state record for a team sporting event when 42,075 came to see the Badgers take on the Rebels ... The nearly 5,000 temporary bleacher seats in the north end zone that were installed to accommodate the extra fans are expected to be completely removed by Saturday's kickoff ... The record crowd witnessed one of the strangest endings in college history when play was ended with 7:41 remaining in the fourth quarter after a transformer blew and left the stadium nearly completely dark until emergency lighting kicked in ... The odd finish meant UNLV fell to 0-1 all-time in games that were not actually completed.
JAYHAWKS vs. REBELS NOTES
Kansas and UNLV meet for the first time but the Rebels did play a two-year series with KU's in-state rival Kansas State in 1993-94 ... The game will be returned by UNLV when the Rebels travel to Lawrence on September 27, 2003 ... John Robinson has never faced Kansas while coaching USC and UNLV but is 9-3 vs. teams that now make up the Big 12 Conference: 3-0 vs. Texas Tech, 2-0 vs. Oklahoma, 2-0 vs. Baylor, 1-0 vs. Texas A&M, 1-1 vs. Missouri and 0-2 vs. Iowa State ... The schools have played each other three times in men's basketball with the Jayhawks taking each game, including the most recent meeting in 1998.
