CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Derek Anderson matched a school record with five touchdown passes as Oregon State routed UNLV 47-17 Saturday.
Anderson, a sophomore in his first season as the Beavers' starter, completed 20 of 26 passes for 356 yards. His five TD passes tied the mark set by Erik Wilhelm against Akron in 1987.
James Newson had 17 catches for 167 yards for the Beavers (3-0), who had 461 total yards.
Joe Haro scored on a 1-yard run and Dillon Pieffer added a 21-yard field goal for UNLV (1-2), but the Rebels were stymied by Oregon State's defense throughout the game.
It marked the first time UNLV coach John Robinson and Oregon State coach Dennis Erickson had faced each other, despite long and successful careers in college and the NFL.
Robinson had been 11-0 against the Beavers as Southern California's coach, his best record against any school. His last victory with USC was against the Beavers, 23-0, on Nov. 15, 1997.
The Beavers jumped out to a 23-0 first-quarter lead. Anderson scored on a 1-yard keeper and threw a 28-yard TD pass to Newson. After a team safety, Anderson hit Tim Euhus with a 19-yard scoring strike.
Tailback Steven Jackson, a Las Vegas native who said he chose Oregon State because of Erickson and the lure of the Pac-10 Conference, broke through two tackles and scored on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Anderson.
Anderson followed with a 2-yard TD pass to Jermaine Jackson.
UNLV finally scored with nine seconds left in the first half. Haro thrust the ball over a pile of players for the TD, making it 37-7 at halftime.
Anderson hit Shawn Kintner with a 40-yard touchdown pass to open the second half. He was replaced with Adam Rothenfluh before the end of the quarter.
UNLV's Dillon Pieffer kicked his 21-yarder with 1:21 left in the third quarter, but Oregon State's Kirk Yliniemi answered with a 45-yarder to open the final period.
Deon Burnett added a 1-yard scoring run with 1:12 to go in the game for the Rebels.
UNLV quarterback Jason Thomas completed 7 of 15 passes for 76 yards. He had 14 carries for 74 yards.
