LAS VEGAS - The UNLV baseball team will begin its annual Scarlet and Gray World Series, Thursday, Nov. 6, at Earl E. Wilson Stadium beginning at 2 p.m. Game One will pit two freshman lefthanders against each other. Kevin Skogley (Team Grey) will be hurling against Ryan Taber (Team Scarlet).

"I have been very pleased with our fall practice," said UNLV head coach Buddy Gouldsmith. "Our players have worked very hard in fall practice to get ready for the upcoming season. Moreover, I am anxious to see them perform in a more competitive situation. The Scarlet and Gray World Series will provide them that opportunity."

The Gray Team will be led by junior right fielder Eric Nielsen (.365, 7 home runs, 41 RBI), and senior first baseman Eddie Gill (.323, 8 home runs, 54 RBI). The Gray Team will also boast freshman standouts Ryan Kowalski and Justin Tellam. The team will be led on the mound by hard-throwing sophomore Matt Luca (5-0, 4.17 ERA), sophomore Matt Wagner (1-0, 4.40 ERA) and freshman lefthander Kevin Skogley.

Team Scarlet will be led by a pair of senior infielders in shortstop Peter White (.336, 10 home runs, 49 RBI) and second baseman Ryan Ruiz (.296, 9 home runs, 41 RBI). The team will also have the versatile Brent Johnson (.350, 6 home runs, 55 RBI) in their line up. On the mound, the Scarlet Team will boast senior lefty Jake Vose (8-4, 5.20 ERA) and new comer Matt Minor.

"These are two even teams," said Gouldsmith. "I encourage friends, family and fans to attend what I feel will be a great preview of the 2004 UNLV baseball team."

All games will be seven inning contest and are open to the public.
