LAS VEGAS - The 2003 Rebel Baseball Scout Day was a huge success. The event was covered by 17 major league teams including the Twins, Astros, Brewers, Braves, Tigers, Mariners, Rockies, Angels, Cardinals, Dodgers, A's, White Sox, Yankees, Royals, Phillies, Red Sox and the Major League Scouting Bureau. UNLV baseball would like to thank everyone in attendance.
"It was great to see the interest in our program, it is a good indication of the type of club we have," said head coach Buddy Gouldsmith.
The day started out with the UNLV players running the 60 yard dash and taking batting practice. Senior second basemen Ryan Ruiz (.296, 9 home runs, 41 RBI) had the fasted time of the day, followed by senior centerfielder Brent Johnson (.350, 6 home runs, 55 RBI). Senior first baseman Eddie Gill (.323, 8 home runs, 54 RBI) put on a display in batting practice, consistently launching the ball over the fence.
When gametime hit, the pitchers stole the show. Senior Jake Vose (8-4, 5.20 ERA) and Junior transfer Matt Minor had impressive performances from the mound. Johnson, a two-way player, also looked impressive during his two innings of work. In the shortened six-inning game junior right fielder Eric Nielsen (365, 7 home runs, 41 RBI) had the teams only RBI with a single to left. Ruiz had a single with a stolen base.
"Our players represented themselves and our program well," Gouldsmith said. "I was really excited with the enthusiasm from the team.
The next showcase-type event will take place Nov. 22-23 when UNLV host their annual Thanksgiving Showcase Camp.
