HENDERSON - A pair of home runs by Central Michigan's Christin Sobeck was the difference as the Chippewas defeated the UNLV softball team 5-1 at the UNLV Softball Classic at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park on Saturday.
UNLV (4-9) actually drew first blood in the game when second baseman Morgan Bostwick drilled a solo homer to left to lead off the second. It was Bostwick's second bomb of the day after the sophomore's three-run shot was responsible for the winning runs against Texas Tech earlier in the day.
CMU (1-2) struck back in the bottom of the fourth. Rebel starter Jackie Kerrigan, working on a one-hitter, gave up a one-out single to the Chippewas' Karly McCormack. Kerrigan sat down one more batter before Sobeck hit a towering shot to left to put her team in the lead, 2-1.
The Chips tacked on a third run in the fifth on Brittany Decker's double and chased Kerrigan from the game.
McCormack led off the sixth for CMU, and was struck out by reliever Becky McDonald, but reached first after the third strike was dropped. That set the table for Sobeck, who knocked her second straight homer to the same spot on the field.
Central Michigan pitcher Amber Puchalski tossed a gem, allowing just two hits, both to Bostwick. She struck out nine batters in completing her first win of the year.
Both teams will continue play in the UNLV Softball Classic on Sunday at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park.
