LAS VEGAS - The UNLV baseball team defeated No. 3 Cal State Fullerton 8-6 on Sunday afternoon. Robert Vankirk's two-run eighth-inning homer off Fullerton's All-American closer Chad Cordero proved the difference as UNLV held off a ninth-inning rally by the Titans for the win.
With the win, the Rebels improve to 6-3 on the season. The Titans were denied the sweep and fall to 8-1.
David Seccombe (2-0) picked up the win for the Rebels. He threw five innings, giving up five runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. James Thompson threw three scoreless innings, giving up just two hits. Ryan Braun picked up the save in one inning of work.
Dustin Miller (1-1) earned the loss for the Titans. He gave up four runs on four hits with one strikeout.
UNLV's Patrick Dobson finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored. Ryan Ruiz went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. He hit his second home run of the season in the opening inning.
VanKirk finished the game 1-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Fernando Valenzuela went 2-for-2 with one RBI and two runs scored.
UNLV hosts a three-game series with Villanova next weekend beginning on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
