LAS VEGAS - Louisiana-Monroe's Ashley Palma hit a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth to break a scoreless tie and lead the Indians to a 1-0 victory over the UNLV softball team at Eller Media Stadium on Sunday.
ULM (5-8) started the inning with a runner at second per the international tie-breaker rule. With one out, UNLV issued an intentional walk to catcher Casey Goodman, who was 3-for-3 on the day with two doubles. Then a throwing error allowed the Indians lead runner to arrive at third safely, loading the bases for Palma.
Despite a masterful pitching performance from Rebel freshman Becky McDonald, UNLV (9-12) was unable to generate much offense, collecting just four hits over four innings. The Rebel defense, however, did not commit an error until the final inning, and McDonald struck out nine in nine innings of work.
ULM (5-8) also leaned on superior pitching as Sarah Freeman did not allow a hit over the game's last five innings and struck out four.
The Rebels enjoy next weekend off before returning home on March 7 to host their final tournament of the year. The three-day, 10-game tourney will feature UNLV, New Mexico State, Utah State and Nevada-Reno.
Tennessee 4, Syracuse 2
Tennessee broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the sixth winning to seal a 4-2 victory and earn the UNLV Mini Tournament title with a 4-1 record on the weekend.
