Baseball Spoils UNR's Home Opener

RENO, Nev. - The UNLV baseball team spoiled Nevada, Reno's home opener with a 13-5 victory on Friday afternoon at Peccole Park. With the win, the Rebels improve to 10-3 on the season, while the Wolf Pack fall to 4-10.

Robbie Van (2-1) earned the win. He gave up five runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings of work. Matt Luca pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up one hit. Jason Guerra finished the final 3.1 innings, giving up only two hits, while striking out six. He picked up his first save of the season.

Mateo Miramontes picked up the loss. He gave up eight runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings or work.

Five Rebels homered in the game. Ryan Ruiz and Robert VanKirk hit their fourth each. Ruiz finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. VanKirk went 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored.

Fernando Valenzuela homered and finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Brent Johnson went 2-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored. He hit his first home run of the season.

Eddie Gill finished 2-for-5 with one run scored, three RBI and a homer.

Eric Nielsen extended his consecutive game hitting-streak to 11 games with a 1-for-4 effort. Patrick Dobson's hitting-streak extended to eight games with a 1-for-5 outing.

Three Wolf Pack players finished the game with a pair of hits. Erick Streeland went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

UNLV and UNR continue the three-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m.
