LAS VEGAS - The UNLV baseball team won its home opener over College of Charleston 10-6 on Friday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. With the win, the Rebels improve to 3-1 on the season, the Cougars fall to 0-1.
Trailing 4-3 in the sixth, UNLV scored seven runs thanks in part to two errors, two hit batsmen and a run-scoring wild pitch. In all, eight different Rebels crossed the plate on the night.
Robbie Van pitched five solid innings, giving up three runs on five hits and recording nine strikeouts. James Thompson (1-0) earned the win, throwing 2.2 shutout innings in relief.
Tee Morris (0-1) picked up the loss for the Cougars. He gave up four runs, three unearned, on one hit in 0.1 innings of work.
Garett Shitanishi, Fernando Valenzuela and Eddie Gill each finished the night 2-for-4 at the plate. Shitanishi drove in two runs while scoring once.
UNLV and College of Charleston continue the three-game series on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
