LAS VEGAS - The UNLV baseball team defeated Air Force 13-7 on Saturday afternoon despite a one hour rain delay and being out-hit by the Falcons 14-9. With the win, The Rebels improve to 15-7, 2-0 in Mountain West Conference play. The Falcons fall to 8-11, 0-5 in league play.
Ben Scheinbaum (1-0) picked up the win in relief. He threw four shutout innings, with three hits and four strikeouts. Starter Adam Lesko pitched four innings, giving up four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.
Johnny Koegel (0-2) earned the loss. He gave up nine runs on six hits in four innings of work. Only four of the nine runs were earned.
Rebels Stephen Ghutzman and Fernando Valenzuela contributed a pair of hits in the game.
Ghutzman finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Valenzuela went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Valenzuela hit his sixth home run of the season in the eighth inning.
Eric Nielsen also hit his sixth home run of the season. He went 1-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Derck Kasel led the Falcons, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
UNLV and Air Force wrap up the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
