SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Utah State's Sara Fleming hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth and that was all the Aggies needed to defeat the UNLV softball team, 1-0, at the Capital Classic on Saturday.
UNLV (14-21) lost for the second time of the day by a 1-0 count despite a solid pitching performance by freshman Becky McDonald. The Rebels' young lefty struck out nine batters and scattered just six hits, all singles except for the long ball.
Offensively, UNLV produced just four hits in the game, all singles. Its best scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the fifth when Britney Hillyer and Sam Sardinha delivered back-to-back hits. However, the inning ended on a fielder's choice and a flyout, leaving the runner stranded.
Despite benefiting from four Rebel fielding errors, USU (5-16) was unable to produce any more runs in taking its second win of the season from UNLV.
