Series Win In Blowout

PROVO, Utah - The UNLV baseball team put together 24 hits in a 19-9 win over BYU on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Rebels earn a 2-1 series victory and improve their record to 19-8, 5-1 in Mountain West Conference play. The loss drops BYU to 7-14, 2-4 in league play.

James Thompson (2-0) is credited with the win for the Rebels. He threw 2.2 innings and gave up two unearned runs off three hits.

Starter Jake Vose lasted only one inning, giving up four runs on five hits. Ben Scheinbaum pitched well in relief of Vose. He went four innings, giving up three runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Donnie Watts finished the final 1.1 innings, allowing only one hit.

Michel Bergeron (1-2) picked up the loss for BYU. He gave up four runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of work.

Brent Johnson and Fernando Valenzuela led the Rebels offensively with five hits each. Johnson finished the game 5-for-6 with two RBI and four runs scored, while Valenzuela went 5-for-6 with four RBI and three runs scored.

Eric Nielsen went 4-for-5 with three doubles. He drove in one run and scored three times.

Ryan Ruiz finished the game 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and one run scored. Patrick Dobson, Robert VanKirk and Peter White contributed a pair of hits each. Dobson hit his seventh home of the season and second of the series.

BYU was led by Ranger Wiens' 3-for-5 outing. He drove in three runs and scored once.

UNLV hosts UC Irvine on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m
