LAS VEGAS - A fielding error in the bottom of the seventh paved the way for the game's only run as the UNLV softball team defeated Colorado State, 1-0, in the opening game of Friday's doubleheader.
The Rams (18-7, 1-1) rebounded in the nightcap, taking a 5-1 decision to force a split in the doubleheader, but not before the Rebels (15-22, 1-1) snapped their 13-game winning streak behind a one-hitter from Jacqueline Kerrigan.
The day began as a pitchers' duel between the conference's top two winning hurlers. The Rams got the first crack at Kerrigan as leadoff hitter Stephanie Roberts dropped a short bloop single in front of the second baseman for an infield hit.
That was the last base runner CSU would enjoy as Kerrigan sat down the next 21 hitters in a row, completing her sixth shutout of the year.
However, Ram starter Megan Masser was equally effective. She mowed down the first six hitters she faced before a Pauline Glenn single broke up the monotony in the third. Glenn, however, was erased on a double play.
The Rebels were not able to get a runner into scoring position until the bottom of the seventh. Lisa Moses ripped a one-out single to center and moved into scoring position with a two-out swipe of second. Wendy Godwin the lifted a short fly into right field that Carly Allen couldn't handle, and as the ball fell to the ground, Moses rounded third and cruised home for the easy score.
In the nightcap, Colorado State got on the board early. Roberts started the game with a double and came around to score on an RBI single by Ricki Walker.
But the big inning for the Rams came in the third. A walk , a single and a dropped fly ball loaded the bases for CSU, but Rebel starter Becky McDonald struck out Melanie Mahoney for the second out of the inning. The rally began from there, however, as McDonald walked the next batter, putting the Rams up 2-0. After a passed ball allowed another run to score, Katie Dean then delivered a timely double to left center, driving in two more and giving the Rams a 5-0 edge.
UNLV avoided the shutout as Pauline Glenn drove in a run in the bottom of the fourth, but it was all the Rebels could muster.
The Rebels continue conference play on Sunday, March 30, when they host New Mexico in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Eller Media Stadium.
