LAS VEGAS - The UNLV baseball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-5 victory over Memphis on Friday night. The Rebels scored two runs in the eighth inning off a Tiger error to break a 5-5 tie.
The win improves the Rebels to 11-6 on the season, while the Tigers fall to 3-5.
UNLV freshman starter Matt Luca was impressive through five innings, but a late-game tie denied him his first victory. He kept the Tigers scoreless, giving up only four hits with four strikeouts.
Ryan Braun (2-0) earned the win in relief. He threw 1.1 hitless innings with two strikeouts.
Memphis' Erik Filsinger (0-2) picked up the loss. He kept the Rebels hitless in two innings of work, but was credited with the two unearned runs in the eighth.
Andrew D'Angelo finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Brent Johnson went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. He drove in D'Angelo in three successive at-bats.
Patrick Dobson extended his hitting-streak to 12 games with a 1-for-4 outing.
Fernando Valenzuela and Eddie Gill also contributed a single hit each.
UNLV and Memphis will continue the three-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m.
