SALT LAKE CITY - The 21st ranked UNLV baseball team dropped a 7-2 decision to the University of Utah on Friday afternoon at Franklin Covey Field. With the loss, the Rebels fall to 27-11 overall, 11-3 in Mountain West Conference play. The Utes improve to 17-17, 5-8 in league play.
Robbie Van (3-4) earned the loss for the Rebels. He gave up three runs off seven hits in 6.0 innings of work. James Thompson struggled in a brief relief appearance. He gave up four runs off five hits in only two-thirds of an inning. James Wickman finished the game, giving up only two hits in 1.1 innings.
Utah's Doug Mackay (4-2) picked up the win. He threw 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on five hits.
UNLV scattered six hits from six different players. Fernando Valenzuela doubled and finished the game 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Patrick Dobson went 1-for-3 extending his consecutive-game hitting streak to 10 games.
UNLV and Utah wrap up the three-game set on Saturday at 11 a.m. PST.
