LAS VEGAS - The UNLV softball team scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to post a 3-2 come-from-behind victory in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader against BYU before dropping the nightcap 14-0 at Eller Media Stadium.
The Rebels (19-32, 3-9) took advantage of two BYU errors in the fifth to score the tying and go-ahead runs. Down 2-1 with two out in the inning, Lisa Moses kicked off the rally by reaching first on a throwing error by the shortstop. Wendy Godwin then drew a walk, putting two aboard for Pauline Glenn. Glenn ripped a single into left field that hopped past the glove of Brooke Cadiente, allowing both runners to come around and score.
Once UNLV took the lead, Jacqueline Kerrigan was called in to relieve starter Becky McDonald. Kerrigan, seeing her first action since suffering a broken nose in San Diego on April 12, shut down the Cougars over the last two innings. She allowed just one hit to pick up her first save of the year and the fifth of her career. McDonald pitched just as effectively, scattering just three singles in five innings of work to earn her third win.
The Cougars (28-12, 6-5) jump started their offense in the day's second game, scoring six times in the top of the first. In all, they pounded out 16 hits and 14 runs.
But it wasn't the BYU offense that stymied the Rebels. Starter Mandy Flint was nearly untouchable, carrying a no-hitter into the fifth inning. With the Cougars leading 14-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Flint needed only to escape the inning to complete the gem. But with two outs, Kira Enlow lined a pinch-hit single into left to break up the no-hit bid. Flint retired the next batter to end the game.
After playing six games in four days, the Rebels now enjoy a week of rest before entertaining league-leading San Diego State in their home finale on Saturday, April 26 at 1:00 p.m.
