LAS VEGAS - The 20th-ranked UNLV baseball team defeated BYU on Thursday night 15-8 at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. With the win, the Rebels improve to 33-12, 16-3 in Mountain West Conference play. The Cougars fall to 19-18, 11-8 in league play.
UNLV senior second baseman Garett Shitanishi hit two home runs in the game and finished 4-for-4 with five RBI and five runs scored.
Patrick Dobson drove in four runs and scored twice, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Eddie Gill hit a pair of doubles and finished 3-for-5 on the day.
Peter White went 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Andrew D'Angelo, Fernando Valenzuela and Eric Nielsen added a single hit each.
Ben Scheinbaum improved to 5-0 on the mound in relief of starter Matt Luca. Scheinbaum threw 3.2 innings, giving up three runs off four hits with seven strikeouts. Luca went 4.2 innings, giving up five runs off four hits.
Jeff Mouser (4-5) picked up the loss for the Cougars. He gave up eight runs off six hits in 3.2 innings of work.
UNLV and BYU continue the three-game series on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
