SALT LAKE CITY - The 22nd-ranked but short-handed UNLV women's tennis team moved to within one victory of its first Mountain West Conference regular-season championship by downing Utah 6-1 at the Eccles Tennis Center Friday.
Despite missing their top player, Paulina Janus, because of an elbow injury, the Lady Rebels improved to 15-3 overall and 6-0 in the league while the Utes fell to 4-10 and 0-4. Playing indoors because of a spring snow storm, UNLV began the match by winning two of three doubles matches for one team point.
In singles play, five of six Lady Rebel scored and four were victorious in straight sets. Gyorgyi Zsiros won at No. 1, Tracie Chong at No. 2, Agnieszka Abram at No. 3, Cindy Treber at No. 4 and Amy Hadziosmanovic at No. 5.
The Lady Rebels will close out their regular-season by facing No. 56 BYU Saturday in Provo.
