LAS VEGAS - The 15th-ranked UNLV baseball team picked up its 40th win of the season in a 12-7 victory over Utah on Thursday night. Junior shortstop Peter White went 3-for-5 with two home runs. He hit a grand slam in the fourth and a solo shot in the seventh. He drove in five runs and scored three times.
The Rebels are 40-14, 23-5 in Mountain West Conference play. The Utes fall to 22-29, 9-19 in league play.
Robbie Van (7-4) picked up the win for the Rebels. He threw 8.1 innings, giving up seven runs off eight hits with seven strikeouts. Jason Guerra finished the game with two strikeouts.
Clay Westmoreland (5-6) suffered the loss on the mound. He pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits. He struck out three and walked one.
Rebel Eddie Gill finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Fernando Valenzuela went 1-for-4 with a home run. He now leads the team with 13 on the season. The Utes Mike Westfall went 2-for-5 with two home runs.
UNLV and Utah continue the three-game series on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
