LAS VEGAS - The 15th-ranked UNLV baseball team improved to 41-14 on the season with an 8-2 victory over Utah on Friday night. The Rebels' 24-5 mark in league play is a Mountain West Conference record for wins in a season. New Mexico held the previous record at 22.
Jake Vose (7-4) picked up the win for the Rebels on the mound. He gave up only two runs off seven hits in eight innings of work. He struck out seven without giving up a walk. Shane Clatterbuck finished the final inning, striking out the side.
Doug Mackay (4-6) is credited with the loss. He gave up five runs in five innings.
Stephen Ghutzman led the Rebels offensively, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Garett Shitanishi and Fernando Valenzuela contributed a pair of hits each. Shitanishi went 2-for-5 with one RBI and three runs scored, while Valenzuela went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Valenzuela also extended his errorless game streak to 54 which includes 396 putouts and 31 assists.
UNLV and Utah wrap up the three-game set and regular season on Saturday at 2 p.m. Senior Day festivities begin at approximately 1:40 p.m.
