Rebels Down Aztecs

SAN DIEGO - The 18th ranked UNLV baseball team defeated San Diego State on Friday night 7-3 at Tony Gwynn Stadium. With the win, the Rebels improve to 36-12, 19-3 in Mountain West Conference play and maintain a five-game lead over New Mexico. The Aztecs fall to 21-25, 13-9 in league play.

Robbie Van (6-4) earned the win for the Rebels. He threw 7.0 innings, giving up three run seven eight hits with nine strikeouts. Ryan Braun picked up his seventh save, striking out the final two batters of the game.

Mike Moat (4-5) picked up the loss. He gave up six runs off eight hits in 6.0 innings of work.

Stephen Ghutzman, Fernando Valenzuela and Peter White each went 2-for-4 in the game. Ghutman, playing in left field for the first time this season, also scored twice. Valenzuela added two RBI and continues to lead the team with 49 this season. White drove in two runs and scored once. He hit his fifth home run of the season.

Four other Rebels contributed a single hit each. Patrick Dobson went went 0-for-1 with one RBI and two runs scored. He was walked three times.

Anthony Gwynn led the Aztecs, going 4-for-4 with one run scored.

UNLV and San Diego State continue the three-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m. Matt Luca is scheduled to pitch for the Rebels. It is his first appearance against the Aztecs since no-hitting them on March 25.
